Treating hair loss in men
Hair loss in men is a disorder affecting millions in spite of their age and general health condition. Hair loss occurs because of different factors, ranging from taking medications or having a recent surgery to inherited hormonal problems. While temporary hair loss caused by taking drugs, being under a lot of stress or having a surgery is most likely to pass, permanent hair loss requires treatment. It’s important to remember that any of the remedies available these days will provide nothing more than treatment, as curing this type of hair loss (male pattern baldness) is impossible because it’s difficult to root out the cause of the disorder. So, what are the most popular options for treating hair loss in men?
There are two most popular and commonly recommended ways — medicinal and surgical. Medicinal way of dealing with the problem involves taking medications and applying some of them directly onto the scalp to promote hair growth. There is finasteride — a popular treatment that comes as a tablet and blocks the activity of DHT in the body. It stops the shedding and promotes hair growth in about 9 out of 10 males (which is a very high success rate). Besides finasteride, some patients find another remedy called minoxidil very useful. Minoxidil comes as a lotion and needs to be applied to grow new hair. Hair loss will resume if you stop the treatment. Plastic surgery includes scalp reduction (efficient for males with bald spot on the very top of their head), hair transplant (the hair from the back of the patient’s head is used for that) and flap surgery (expanding the part of the scalp with growing hair). Each of those ways has its advantages and disadvantages. A surgery will give you an instant result for a certain period of time, and during this period, you can forget about taking medications or applying anything. However, hormonal problems, if present, will resurface at some point again, and the process of hair loss will most probably resume. In case of taking medicine and applying other forms of male pattern baldness treatment, the effects take longer to appear, and the patient needs to carry on with the treatment for as long as he wants to see the result, but as long as he does so, the result is stable and guaranteed. |
